Exploring the Intersections of Music Education and Museum Education

Fri, April 12, 7:45 to 9:15am, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

Many museums and other cultural institutions in the United States and internationally have exhibits and educational programs dedicated to music. While various scholars have researched intersections in museum education and arts education, and music in museums in a non-educational context, minimal scholarly work exists in either the music education or museum education fields on music teaching and learning in a museum setting. In this paper, I explore the connections and similarities between music education and museum education pedagogy. I conclude with a proposed framework that provides music education and/or museum education researchers with intersecting elements of music and museum education pedagogy and potential avenues for research on music education experiences in a museum environment.
