Fostering Teaching Skills in an Online Graduate Fellowship

Fri, April 12, 9:35 to 11:05am, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

Fellowships represent an important mechanism for graduate students to develop their teaching skills and reflect on their career goals. We developed an online teaching fellowship program that offered workshops and mentored cohort experiences for graduate students in multiple disciplines. In the 2022 fellowship, we evaluated the impact of our fellowship on teaching skills and professional development using participant reflections and pre-post surveys (n=17). Teaching self-efficacy improved significantly. Regular interactions with interdisciplinary cohorts and teaching mentors were helpful for most participants. However, additional structure in their cohort meetings and guidance for use of the digital tools in the fellowship are needed for some.
