The purpose of this study was to examine the factor structure of international doctorate students’ sense of belonging by using a national dataset, A Data-Based Assessment of Research-Doctorate Programs. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) identified the underlying dimensions of factors that are likely to impact sense of belonging. The authors subsequently tested the EFA model using confirmatory factor analyses with a subgroup of the data. Results indicated that academic and professional training, advisor support, graduate assistantship, and institutional resources have significant direct effect on international doctorate students’ sense of belonging. Future research and potential limitations of the study are discussed.
