Career adaptability is crucial for individuals to succeed during transitions. In the recent 20 years, growing research has been conducted to investigate career adaptability, especially the factors that support career adaptability. This article systematically reviews empirical work on the antecedents of career adaptability and research design based on 49 articles from 2002 to 2022. Findings suggest that most studies focus on personal antecedents and quantitative research design. The antecedents can be classified as personal, micro-contextual, and macro-contextual factors. We suggest researchers pay attention to the social cognitive career theory and try to adopt mixed-method research to investigate how career adaptability functions in the turbulent era more widely and deeply.
