This session brings together three studies conducted by the presenter surrounding school administrator perceptions and hiring practices of teachers who participated in international teaching or student teaching, perceptions of teachers who taught or student taught abroad, and perceptions of student teachers who had just returned from international student teaching. Findings reveal that administrators, teachers, and student teachers believe that there are a multitude of benefits to international teaching and that these experiences positively impact K-12 student learning. However, international teaching experience is rarely accounted for in the hiring process. Recommendations include how districts might adjust their hiring process to account for various experiences that teachers bring to their positions. The significance of developing teacher reflective skills is also discussed.
