Previous physical education research has illustrated the importance of Black teachers in school settings. Research has also noted that physical education teacher education (PETE) programs need to do a better job preparing novice teachers for urban schools. This paper brings such considerations together by exploring the experiences of a Black male physical education (PE) teacher who has taken a non-traditional route to teaching. Specifically, we – three authors, including the PE teacher himself – share narratives to detail examples of what a physical educator who does not fit a ‘typical’ novice teacher profile can bring to the gym, and to urban schools more broadly.
