Using Cooperative Learning to Improve Reading Comprehension in High Schools

Abstract

This manuscript reports a Level 2 exploratory randomized controlled trial of the Reciprocal Reading programme in high schools. The programme is a workforce development programme that supports teachers and teaching assistants develop and deliver targeted reading comprehension cooperative learning instruction to high school students. The Reciprocal Reading programme was delivered successfully over 6 months in a sample of 316 students from 14 schools with high socio-economic disadvantage. Positive Effect Sizes were observed in reading comprehension performance of intervention students, compared to control. A larger study is required to ascertain whether effects generalise.
