Increasing Cultural Intelligence Among University Faculty: Toward More Just Educational Spaces (Poster 19)

Sun, April 14, 3:05 to 4:35pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall A

Abstract

In this mixed-methods action research study, we hosted a professional development program to equip a cohort of university faculty members with tools to become more inclusive of culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) students. We developed a framework for Cultural Intelligence (CI) and an accountability tool using an Innovation Configuration (IC) Map to help faculty demonstrate CI via the three Cultural Capabilities: (1) Openness, (2) Awareness, and (3) Responsiveness. Using document analyses, surveys, observations, and focus group discussions, we determined that faculty most benefited from the program in building community and understanding how to apply CI for purposes of CLD student inclusion. Faculty also reported a nearly unanimous need for greater Awareness, as well as needs for more Openness and Responsiveness.
