Abstract

The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) has spent over two decades researching the importance of social-emotional learning (SEL). The CASEL’s (2020b) research revealed that the implementation of evidence-based SEL programs led to an 11% gain in student achievement, fewer behavior issues, and decreases in mental health issues. Social-emotional learning helps students thrive in school and life by teaching our youth to manage emotions and solve problems. This study was designed to describe evidence-based approaches for SEL, disseminate findings of the effects of an evidence-based approach to teaching SEL, and inform future recommendations for implementing a comprehensive Wellness Program within the educational setting. Findings revealed social-emotional competencies are perceived to yield positive benefits to students and teachers.
