This paper describes findings from a design-based research study spanning four semesters of an undergraduate computer science course. Design-based research consists of collecting data from a course to improve student learning experiences. Students' written reflections about their experiences were coded using MAXQDA qualitative and descriptive statistics. We discuss the types and frequency of students' strengths and struggles with design thinking projects. Design thinking is a problem-solving approach for students to create solutions within their projects. We also discuss how student experiences changed across semesters and how such changes may have been associated with our design decisions. Finally, we share our insights from this study for others who intend to use design based research and design thinking in their courses.
