Researchers as Learners: Experiencing the Wild

Sun, April 14, 9:35 to 11:05am, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

In this study we investigated experiential learning, a participative and multi-sensory process, in natural environments, and explored the researchers' experiences and biases. The theoretical frameworks of constructivism and generative learning were employed to understand how learners constructed knowledge based on prior experiences. The researchers conducted an outdoor activity in a local park, using GoPro cameras to collect video data. Personal narratives and video recordings were analyzed using open coding techniques. Findings revealed that researchers' expertise and backgrounds influenced their observations, with varying perspectives and emotional responses evident. The researchers' narratives provided valuable insights influenced by their roles, experiences, and affective responses. This study underscores the importance of diverse perspectives in studying complex outdoor learning environments.
