COVID-19 caused widespread and lasting educational disruptions (González et al., 2022). To help mitigate learning loss, many educators and parents turned to online learning (Kaffenberger, 2021), including personalized learning tools. The present study adopted latent growth analysis to model grade 1-9 students’ academic growth and examined the impact of IXL, a widely used online learning platform, on learning trajectories in math and reading. We found that students with higher IXL usage exhibited faster academic growth compared to those with lower IXL usage. Although different development dynamics may underlie growth in math and reading, our findings suggest that personalized learning tools like IXL can be effective in both helping students recover from learning loss and supporting ongoing academic progress.
