Hitting a Wall in Problems of Practice: Positionality in Transformational Coaching for Teachers

Sun, April 14, 7:45 to 9:15am, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

Creating educational possibilities for students begins with teachers. This study investigates the impact of transformational coaching, using solution-oriented activities, on teachers' decision-making processes and their ability to address challenges in teaching. The coaching sessions fostered greater awareness and understanding of positionality within individual situations and the school/district systems. A positional coaching framework was developed for visual reporting. Teachers identified leadership practices limiting their problem-solving options, making their envisioned solutions unfeasible. This research provides solutions to challenges, creating educational possibilities for students and sets the stage for future studies supporting teachers in different schools and districts, offering insights into the effects of leadership on solution-oriented responses to problems of practice.
