Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Post-Pandemic Classrooms (Poster 38)

Sun, April 14, 11:25am to 12:55pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall A

Abstract

School counselors have an ethical responsibility to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in schools for all students. However, many have reported to feel unprepared to advocate for and address systemic problems in schools (Hatton & Clemons, 2022). The current qualitative study utilized focus groups (N = 48) with school counselors in rural, urban, and suburban school settings across the U.S. to examine their perceptions and experiences of DEI in post-pandemic classrooms. Based on the focus group data, participants perceived that there was a significant barrier in addressing DEI issues due to a variety of barriers from state regulations, feeling unprepared, fear of making mistakes and losing job, and parents. Results and implications will further be discussed in the presentation.
