This study describes the iterative design and development of a chatbot curriculum for massive open online courses (MOOCs). We utilized a four-phase iterative process: an initial evaluation of a chatbot FAQ interface involving 120 students; a subsequent assessment of the experiences of 27 non-native English users that led to a tailored training set; the expansion of the chatbot’s understanding to include nine new themes from a topic analysis of 3,645 forum posts; and an ongoing phase that evaluates student experiences with the chatbot integrated into a course. The study underscores the necessity for a systematic process in developing an equitable chatbot curriculum in MOOCs.
