Indicator 8 assesses families’ perceptions of schools’ work to engage them in special education. Family engagement is influenced by individual and school district factors. Using a dataset where families (N = 6894) were nested within school districts (N = 109), multilevel analysis was conducted to examine factors that influence Indicator 8. Results revealed that age of a child was a negative predictor. Black families reported lower scores than white families, and multiracial families reported higher scores than white families. There was a significant interaction effect between racial diversity of school district and black/white group. The findings highlight importance of discussing facilitation strategies for secondary students and black students with disabilities. Increasing racial diversity may enhance family engagement for black families.
