Two elementary school teachers participated in professional development (PD) activities during the 2022-23 school year to learn about an instructional protocol in mathematics (the YYY) and how to implement it during problem-solving lessons. The YYY is designed to guide teachers to simultaneously develop their students’ mathematical reasoning and learn the mathematics register. The PD activities were intended to help the teachers learn about the YYY and included planning sessions held prior to each of the five problem-solving lessons. In this paper, I describe what was learned from the two teachers through developing productive professional relationships with them about how they could have been better supported to learn about and implement the YYY during problem-solving lessons.
