Sun, April 14, 3:05 to 4:35pm, Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, Floor: Level 4, Room 405

Abstract

This study explores the association of in-school and OST science experiences in grades 3-12 on enjoying science in addition to STEM career interest using logistic regression analyses. The data set included more than 6,446 youth participants across a wide array of demographic differences. The results show that hands-on science activities in school and reading/watching science is strongly associated with enjoying science in grades 3-12. A following logistic regression model shows that that enjoyed science very much were more likely than those that did not to have an expected career in STEM career. The study adds support to policymakers and organizations seeking to increase the availability of formal and informal science opportunities for young children.
