Blogging Our Way Through: Exploring (Re)Membering as a Digital Practice of Resistance for Black Women Graduate Students

Sat, April 13, 3:05 to 4:35pm, Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, Floor: Level 4, Franklin 7

Abstract

Despite the racist and sexist infrastructures of institutions of higher education, Black women continue to find creative ways to humanize their experiences in and throughout the academy across their multiple marginalized identities. Uniquely, the blogsphere offers spaces for Black women graduate students to share their experiences typically had in group chats, sister circles, and beauty shops to bear witness to the similarities shaping their realities. This study explores a Black woman graduate student’s blog entries throughout her educational journey as a practice of digital resistance. I lean on Dillard’s (2012) notion of (re)membering to imagine a future collective thriving, healing, and joy for Black women graduate students’ futures. Implications for higher educational institutions are discussed.
