Centering the Everyday Internal Transformational Resistance of Latina High School Students in Southern California

Abstract

This paper merges two similar but distinctive qualitative studies that center the educational experiences of two Latina high school students in Southern California. The paper uses transformational resistance as a theoretical framework and provides the narratives of Reina and Olivia to answer the question: What are the ways Latina students engage in internal transformational resistance? As leaders of ASB and the marching band as their conformist behavior, the authors argue Reina and Olivia act to achieve educational change that is not overtly oppositional or publicly political, yet still make change to their everyday lives, in their home and at school, that make spaces of learning more just and equitable, integral components of internal
