In this paper, we aim to contribute new knowledge about what immigrant-origin students in late elementary grades want their teachers to know about them and their family, including the role of migration in their lives. In addition, we explore how these students use photography to share information about themselves and their home lives with their teachers and whether and under what conditions, these students feel comfortable sharing photographs about themselves and their lives with classmates. We draw on two separate interviews with twenty students in grades 4-6 and analyze photographs taken with a Polaroid camera to shed light on the aspects of immigrant-origin youth’s out-of-school lives that they deem significant and meaningful for educators and peers to understand.
