Thu, April 11, 12:40 to 2:10pm, Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, Floor: Level 3, Room 307

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to challenge the simplistic understanding of multicultural education and multiculturalism in South Korea. Employing critical discourse analysis, we aim to explore and develop a historical and sociopolitical understanding of multiculturalism and multicultural education in South Korea. The analysis of multicultural education in South Korea sheds light on how the discourse on multicultural education is intertwined with oppressive ideologies and perspectives in the context. This study advances the field by emphasizing the importance of embracing and engaging with productive tensions as a critical starting point to foster equitable and humanizing multicultural education for all students, considering the intricate sociohistorical and political relationships entwined with the field.
