Abstract

There is a concrete ceiling that has yet to be regularly penetrated for this group of women to ascend to the highest ranks of our organizations. Throughout history, powerful lessons have been told through stories, whether by spiritual gurus, sages or servant leaders. The lack of systematized mentorships, combined with the hefty responsibilities of the evolving job of a school administrator, make ascension opportunities even more challenging. This presentation critiques the benefits of this vital relationship (mentorship) for the Latina leader. Learning from others can help us to avoid unneeded challenges. In this chapter, the author vicariously discusses her learned lessons through mentorship opportunities and how these connections can truly assist the Latina leaders internalize the advice that is being offered. Throughout history, powerful lessons have been told through stories, whether by spiritual gurus, sages or servant leaders. It is vital that we meet people who are accomplishing something in their respective fields, and ask to engage with them and learn how they did it, why they did it, and what they had to overcome to reach the heights of their success. In closing, the presenter discusses how mentorship is an invaluable tool that should be viewed as an investment in time in order to grow and provide learned lessons by connecting to someone else's process. The lessons and stories provided minimize the pain and suffering that Latinas may experience and possibly eliminate a limited belief system that creates barriers for Latina leadership advancement.
