Many Canadians believe that they, and their institutions, are racially benevolent and inclusive. However, anti-Black racism remains deeply ingrained within the country's institutions, including its schools. As with the rest of Canada, systemic anti-Black discrimination remains ignored within the province of New Brunswick, continuing systemic limitations that disadvantage persons of African descent within the education system. We ask: In what ways do Black New Brunswickers’ stories complexify our understandings of New Brunswick society in the past, present and future? Through participatory visual inquiry, we seek to disrupt anti-Blackness and include Black participants as co-researchers and community leaders. Using stories, film, drawing, and button-making, we explore how Black New Brunswickers center community care in their artful responses to anti-Black racism.
