There is consensus across a growing body of research that corequisite course models (paired and enhanced courses) in both English and math are more effective than traditional developmental education in increasing student success rates among first year students in introductory college courses. California passed AB 705 in 2017 that encourages the implementation of corequisite support courses in alignment with placement reforms. There is considerable variation in the implementation of corequisite models that is critical to understand as they can limit positive student outcomes. Based on fieldwork in 13 community colleges across the California Community College System, this paper will explore the implementation of California law AB 705 and the challenges of corequisite support.
