Presenter 5 will share anecdotes from two courses. One course focuses on issues of social justice within the American school system and the other centers Black women educators’ promotion of education for liberation within and beyond academic contexts. Although the pedagogical decision to decenter whiteness is intentional within both courses, students’ responses to this approach reveal larger implications for Educators of Color committed to teaching about structures of oppression that inhibit all from experiencing education for liberation. The juxtaposition of these two anecdotes underscore the challenges and joys of education as disruption as students are confronted with new knowledge that challenges existing ways of being, and knowing in the world.
