Delving Into History’s Depths: Exploring Social Justice Teaching in the Turkish Primary Teacher Education Curriculum

Thu, April 11, 12:40 to 2:10pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

Based on one of the central issues of Cochran-Smith’s theory of teacher preparation for social justice, this study aims to explore how social justice teaching has been incorporated into the Turkish primary teacher education curriculum, which was revised in 1998, 2007, and 2018, respectively. The primary teacher education curricula were subjected to content analysis in this qualitative document analysis. Findings revealed that neither the 1998 nor the 2007 primary teacher education curricula mentioned social justice, let alone its teaching. In addition, there is no clear emphasis on social justice teaching in the 2018 primary teacher education curriculum. However, only one of the elective professional knowledge courses includes gender, social justice, and equality in education in different countries.
