In this poster session, we showcase findings from a self-study of a writing group and how the work and support of the group led one of its members to establish a Study Away experience for teacher candidates. After having a difficult time recruiting teacher candidates to study abroad, and with the pandemic limiting international travel, the group worked together to expand their ideas around how to help students develop cultural competence and culturally relevant teaching practices via a Study Away program in a culturally different local area. Using expansive learning theory, the authors highlight how new knowledge was a catalyst for creating innovative ways to develop teacher candidates’ cultural competence and, ultimately, engage in developing new frameworks for Study Away.
