Humanized Online Pedagogy: Playing a Way Through Tension

Thu, April 11, 9:00 to 10:30am, Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, Floor: Level 4, Franklin 1

Abstract

As four teacher educators, we see humanized online pedagogy as a space shaped by and shifting through play and imaginative possibility (Dewey, 2008; Garrison, 1997). Through our online teaching experiences, we recognize intentional opportunities to honor students’ experiences, identities, and imagined futures. When we share our goals, we are met with resistance from colleagues and institutions. These tensions surface from concerns about maintaining humanizing pedagogy and the demands of authority around online pedagogy. In this study, we analyze narratives of these tensions around online pedagogy to offer space for educators to imagine and create humanizing experiences despite their inherent challenges.
