Students’ Zine Making: A Catalyst for Reflecting on Educational Possibilities (Poster 7)

Abstract

Rural schools in Trinidad and Tobago often grapple to function as mechanisms for rural development adequately. This study examined how students attending one rural secondary school in Trinidad and Tobago utilized arts-based research approaches to reflect on their school and community. Gathering data from eight Form Five students, ages 15-17, the study answers the question: How do students’ school, community, and relationships their school and community share influence their educational experiences and hopes for their future? The results revealed a students’ strong love for their community. At the same time, students expressed concern about community challenges. They identified their role as change-makers capable of speaking against inequities and transforming their school and community for the better.
