The turnover or attrition of teachers of Color (ToCs) in the U.S. is commonly told through burnout and pushout narratives. In either narrative, ToCs may be perceived as passive figures being forced out of the profession. This study builds upon the literature on teacher burnout and pushout by investigating how Black and Latinx teachers resist the adverse conditions that they encounter in the teaching profession, even as some actively decide to leave it. This study utilizes media content analysis to center the voices of Black and Latinx teachers who digitally documented their teacher exit stories. It finds that Black and Latinx teachers demonstrate novel forms of resistance by “calling out” the profession, or by “stepping out” of it.
