Experiences of Black Teachers With Racism: Policies and Practices to Support Retention

Thu, April 11, 4:20 to 5:50pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

This study aimed to identify and develop a deeper understanding of the perceived racialized experiences of Black teachers in the US in Pk-12 public school settings, the psychological effects of these race-based experiences, and how these experiences relate to the lack of retention in the workforce. The investigation used a mixed-methods approach, gathering survey and interview data. Recommendations for school leaders and teachers speak to the need for policies, practices, organizational accountability, and support for Black teachers. Recommendations include; 1) ensuring awareness for filing grievances and teacher evaluation processes, 2) identifying allies and developing support inside and outside the school system, and 3) Creating safe spaces where Black teachers and teachers with historically marginalized identities can voice their concerns.
