Rather than emphasizing arithmetic as a basic mathematics skill, we engaged in constructing educational possibilities for all students by innovating reasoning as basic to mathematical thinking. Abstract strategy games can invite all students into joyful mathematical experiences and contain possibilities for using spatial and logical reasoning (SLR). In this study, Grade 4-6 students played Santorini for five weeks. Data included videos, photos, reflection sheets, and field notes, analyzed by coding SLR components. Our results show that Santorini gameplay occasioned students’ co-enactment of SLR; reasoning components occurred simultaneously and constantly, also synergistically enhanced each other. By emphasizing reasoning as basic to mathematical thinking, our study contributes to the ongoing efforts to ensure equitable access to high quality mathematics for all students.
