COVID-Cohort Students’ College Preparedness: Opportunities, Supports, and Challenges Due to the Pandemic

Abstract

This survey study investigated self-reported college preparedness of students from the class of 2023, whose high school experiences were substantially disrupted by the pandemic. Students reported high academic, social, and personal preparedness, but relatively low financial preparedness. Using multiple linear regression models, results showed that number of college preparation activities in which a student participated, and number of college preparation supports provided by the school were positive factors and explained significant proportions of variation in four preparedness areas, while number of challenges a student experienced due to the pandemic was a significantly negative factor. Taking four or more college credit courses was also positively related to academic and personal preparedness. These factors are clearly important for students’ college preparation.
