Beyond Monolithic Views: Thirdspace and Asian Art Museum Education

Sun, April 14, 3:05 to 4:35pm, Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, Floor: Level 4, Room 408

Abstract

This study inquires about a space at a national Asian art museum in the United States. By analyzing the space with a postcolonial and poststructural perspective, especially using the Thirdspace theory, it aims to revisit the monolithic views on the function of the museum as an informal learning space. With data collected from the First-, Second-, and Thirdspace of the targeted space, this research analyzes the authority of the system of representation that exists in the museum. It also explores how museums should respond and eventually construct educational possibilities in response to post-colonial and anti-racist missions that challenge our time.
