Focused Coaching During Induction and Extended From Preparation Enhances Professional Practice

Thu, April 11, 9:00 to 10:30am, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

This presentation will describe a focused analysis of observation data for new teachers who participated in an induction program extending coaching protocols and liaisons from their preparation program. We conducted case studies of multiple years/cohorts in an induction program that builds from preparation program constructs with program graduates. The results of this study indicate there are statistically significant differences between the mean scores of the first and last observations. The scores on the observation tool helped teachers set small tangible goals for each successive observation. This goal setting resulted in growth on the observation tool across the school year related to scaffolding instruction for diverse student needs and gave early career teachers confidence in themselves and their professional development.
