We share here a podcasting project that covers a range of interdisciplinary critiques of social and emotional learning (SEL) with the aim of reimagining its potential. Recurrent themes in our conversations are: (1) grappling with SEL as both a transformative force and a reinforcer of the status quo and (2) the deconstruction of SEL as a codified term into a more fluid interpretation of fostering social and emotional aspects of humanity. We find that podcasting as a methodology offers a dialogic approach that facilitates a safe environment to feel and think through ideas when complexifying SEL. We hope that our conversations provide critical starting points that may guide pedagogical, methodological, and policy changes as SEL evolves.
