Critical Online Reasoning in Higher Education (CORE): Assessing Knowledge Acquisition in Online Settings in Germany (Poster 34)

Sun, April 14, 1:15 to 2:45pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall A

Abstract

Students in higher education use the Internet increasingly for self-directed learning, which requires skills to determine which information is reliable and accurate as learning material. Although the need to understand, evaluate and strengthen such skills is crucial, little is known about students’ self-directed learning on the Internet and the key influences on students’ search for and use of online sources. Since 2023, the German Science Foundation funds the interdisciplinary research unit presented in this poster. Starting in the winter term 2023/2024 with a representative sample of 1.200 students at twelve large faculties across Germany, we’ll present initial and globally unique insights on the critical online reasoning of incoming students from different domains at the beginning of their higher education studies.
