Mentoring a Preservice Teacher: What Are the Triad Members’ Actual Practices During Debriefings?

Sun, April 14, 7:45 to 9:15am, Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, Floor: Level 4, Room 409

Abstract

While the training of pre-service teachers during internships is crucial, little research has analyzed the actual practices of trainers during triad debriefings (pre-service teacher, cooperating teacher and supervisor). In order to identify the actual practices of the triad, and to ensure a form of equity and fairness between all pre-service teachers, a methodology was developed to analyze conversations during debriefings. The results show that the triad's discussions are strongly focused on learning management, administrative aspects and classroom management. The supervisor's style is directive. In fact, the supervisor speaks for the most part of the debriefing, leaving little opportunity for the future teacher and cooperating teacher to express themselves. This offers educational possibilities for the training of teachers and their trainers.
