The purpose of this study is to gain a better understanding, through the perspectives of teachers and students, regarding how a learning center, started in a marginalized area by community members, facilitated student acquisition of English language skills and how students have utilized scholarship funds to advance their learning in South Korea. Self-determination theory guides this qualitative case study. Themes included student participation, thankfulness and enthusiasm, and challenges. Findings indicate that students in lower income areas had stronger motivation when they learned with kind teachers who used encouraging words rather than just receiving financial support for attending the learning center.
