Differential Consequences of Harmonious vs. Obsessive Passion for Social Media Use (Poster 18)

Thu, April 11, 2:30 to 4:00pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall A

Abstract

Drawing from the Dualistic Model of Passion (Obsessive passion and Harmonious passion), the current study examined how the passion types are associated with social media use patterns, online behaviors, and social media interference in daily lives. Latent profile analysis was conducted on the data from 167 U.S. college students, and three distinct profiles were identified: 1) High Passion (high levels of both obsessive and harmonious passion), 2) Harmonious Passion, and 3) Low Passion. The Harmonious Passion profile exhibited a more adaptive pattern, including reported lower social media usage on weekdays, higher online prosocial behavior but lower antisocial behavior, and lower social media interference in their daily lives, compared to the High Passion profile.
