Power of Reflection and Reflexivity on Science Identity Development: An Iterative Reflection Activity on Identities (Poster 20)

Abstract

This study shares student perspectives from participating in an iterative writing and reflection activity on identities embedded in an undergraduate research training program. The activity took place across multiple points in time and was designed to create space and opportunity for students with diverse identities and experiences to explore and reflect on how their identities exist together in the context of their academic research experiences. Findings suggest how the act of thinking, writing, and sharing out encouraged students to reflect on their own identities, beliefs and their own growth over time. This can help to address the deeply embedded disciplinary cultures that shape students’ perceptions of themselves and tensions with expressing their multiple identities in academic research and STEM environments.
