Online education has increased access to graduate education. This narrative inquiry research study explored the experience of two online graduate students’ experiences through their stories as interpreted by their academic advisor. Results revealed the challenges that some sexual and gender minority online students face when pursuing graduate education. Four themes that affect the online graduate student experience were discovered including a sense of belonging, engagement among peers, financial insecurity, and physical and mental health. This study is significant as it identifies the complexities faced by sexual and gender minority students in an online program and highlights the importance of providing a safe space.
