Currently, there is a growing discussion on the use of artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted technology in academia. Software packages that qualitative researchers may use, including qualitative data analysis software packages (e.g., MAXQDA), have begun to include AI features as well. In response to emerging AI developments, debates surrounding academic integrity, data safety, copyright rules, and authorship have arisen. In this conceptual paper, we overview the emerging place of AI-assisted tools within the field of qualitative research, exemplifying how AI tools may or may not facilitate research practices and the consequences that arise related to their use.
