Leveraging cultural narratives in newly built Aotearoa New Zealand schools can foster school connectedness and place-based learning. By examining the intersection of innovative learning environments, cultural narratives, decolonisation in education, and school connectedness, this paper provides insights into the creation of inclusive and equitable educational spaces. The case study research focuses on the experiences of four school leaders leading practice in newly built schools. The concept of school connectedness has been extended to include cultural connectedness. Partnering with community to integrate cultural narratives can provide a means to promote racial justice in education. Findings highlight the significance of incorporating cultural narratives in shaping learning environments that are inclusive of all, where systemic inequalities are challenged, and social justice is promoted.
