The core principles of andragogy include applying a learner’s need to know, addressing self-concept, allowing prior experience to be part of the process, inviting the learner to be ready, orienting the experience, and stimulating motivation to learn (Knowles et al., 2020; Mezirow, 2000). The structure of lesson study supports teachers as professionals while simultaneously engaging them as adult learners. We discuss connections between andragogy and lesson study to show how the use of lesson study as a professional development model supports teachers as adult learners to facilitate transformative learning.
