ChatGPT Improves Creative Problem-Solving Performance: An Experimental Study

Sat, April 13, 1:15 to 2:45pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

The present study investigates how the use of ChatGPT in university students affects performance and metacognitive experiences during creative problem-solving. In this experimental study, one group of students solved an ill-defined problem-solving task with ChatGPT assistance, while a control group solved the task without ChatGPT. The results showed that ChatGPT moderately improved the quality, elaboration, and originality of the solutions. Students with ChatGPT found the task moderately less difficult and the task required moderately less mental effort. However, interacting with ChatGPT did not increase students' task interest. Although ChatGPT boosted students' confidence in their creative abilities, higher self-efficacy did not translate into superior performance. The article discusses the implications for effectively leveraging AI in education to enhance creativity and problem-solving.
