Out-of-school suspensions are linked to a variety of negative outcomes for students. While much attention has been paid to identifying alternatives to suspension, there is little research on school-based youth courts. The current study uses a mixed-methods approach of student administrative school district data and focus groups in order to examine possible benefits of school-based youth courts. Results indicate that there are potential benefits for schools in terms of reducing suspensions. Additional results indicate positive benefits to students who participate in a school-based youth court including further development of empathy and conflict resolution skills.
