Due to a widening demographic dissimilarity between teachers and P-12 students, training culturally responsive educators has become an imperative in teacher preparation programs. Trust is a necessary precursor to establishing the learning partnerships that enable culturally responsive teaching, and yet preservice teachers often only have an abstract understanding of trust and how to foster it. In the context of a community engagement experience embedded in a foundational literacy course, this research examines how preservice teachers conceptualize and enact literacy practices that enable trust building with the P-12 students served by our community partners in culturally responsive ways.
