Feasibility of a Culturally Tailored Teacher Workshop for Physical Activity Promotion

Thu, April 11, 2:30 to 4:00pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

School-based programs such as PE should be culturally tailored to meet the needs of students and optimally offer physical activity opportunities (PAOs). The purpose of this study was to test the feasibility (with preliminary impact) of a culturally tailored pedagogical workshop toward offering equitable PAOs for all students. The final sample consisted of two certified PE teachers and 175 middle school students in Louisiana (boys: n=79, girls: n=96; 6th grade: n = 75; 7th grade: n = 45, 8th grade). Results showed favorable changes in the PE teachers’ culturally relevant pedagogical practices and their intentions to seek culturally tailored professional development. No changes in students’ responses and PA levels were observed regardless of sociodemographic groups.
